Originally, Harpenden village grew out of West Minster Abbey’s gradual clearing of woodland for farming and settlement within the Wheathampstead Manor, granted by Edward The Confessor in 1060. There is a first reference to a parish church in 1221 and there are Roman remains in the land around Harpenden. Harpenden’s most prestigious contribution to history is Rothamsted Manor and Rothamsted Research Centre – a leading centre for agricultural research.

One notable feature of Harpenden is its abundant parks and commons. The central area of Harpenden, known locally as ‘the village’ is characterised by Church Green, Leyton Green and the High Street Greens. Just to the south of the town centre is Harpenden Common, encompassing a total of 238 acres. The area has a wide selection of sports clubs and leisure facilities.

There are a number of good schools in and around the area including; Crabtree Junior and Infant, Roundwood Park and Aldwickbury Schools.

Harpenden is well located for commuting, with a fast and frequent rail service into St Pancras International, the City and to the south, Gatwick and Brighton, together with road access to the M1, M25 and A1(M). For the air traveller, London Luton International and Stansted Airports are both accessible.

Savills office is located in Station Road, just off the high street to the south end of the town. From here, the office covers some of the most prestigious properties in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.
