High Barnet or Chipping Barnet is a suburban development built around a 12th-century settlement, situated on the edge of the metropolitan green belt, with open countryside close by.
Architecture in the area reflects several hundred years of culture with a diverse range of properties ranging from Georgian through the Victorian / Edwardian era to the present day. Many of the oldest homes in the area are set around the fringes of Hadley Green and Hadley Common. In Hadley Wood, there are beautiful Edwardian homes that were built by the engineers of the rail network at the start of the 19th century.
The town was the site of the Battle of Barnet in 1471. Barnet Hill is said to be the hill mentioned in the nursery rhyme "The Grand Old Duke of York". According to local belief, though not verified, "Barnet stands on the highest ground between London and York"
Barnet High Street includes the shopping centre The Spires a large Waitrose and other well known stores and coffee bars The area has a wide selection of sports clubs and leisure facilities.
The area offers excellent schooling, both public and private, and often features high up in the Sunday Times Schools List as a result. Some local schools include; Lochinver House and Haberdashers School for Boys and Stormont and Queens Wood School for Girls.
The M25, A10 and Al / M1 are all close by and Stansted, Luton and Heathrow Airports are within an hours drive. Just 1 miles from Charing Cross, Barnet is easily accessed by either the tube or rail networks with fast access to either the City or West End in 30-45 minutes.
