Well Walk in Hampstead, a Grade II* listed Georgian town house which was once home to celebrated English landscape painter, John Constable RA, is now for sale for the first time in over 30 years through Savills Hampstead for £4m.

Designed and built in the early nineteenth century, the property is situated in one of Hampstead’s most sought-after streets which is lined with smart period buildings and is positioned within 200m of the open spaces of Hampstead Heath.

From 1819 - 1826, John Constable spent each summer in Hampstead with his family, taking a house in the locality before making a permanent move to Well Walk in 1827. Subsequently, Hampstead became a great focus for his works whereby Constable made numerous studies of cloud formations and oil sketches. His artwork is on display at leading galleries worldwide including Tate Britain, The National Gallery and The V&A as well as Yale Center for British Art and The National Gallery of Art in the United States. His most famous paintings include Dedham Vale of 1802,  The Hay Wain of 1821 and Hampstead Heath with a Rainbow of 1836. John Constable is often cited as having transformed the genre of landscape painting and is an icon of British art. An area of Suffolk is known as Constable Country as it is where he painted some of his most celebrated works.

Accommodation at Well Walk, which was granted a Blue Plaque in 1923, comprises three reception rooms, a kitchen, study/bedroom four, three further bedrooms, a bathroom, shower room, utility room, guest cloakroom and garden. Notable aspects of the five storey house include high ceilings and period features while double doors from the elegant first floor drawing room lead out to individual balconies which overlook the charming patio garden.

Of the sale, Peter Brooks, head of residential, Savills Hampstead says:

“As the former home of such a major figure in English landscape painting, Well Walk is a truly special property and one of north west London’s most significant historical houses. Having lived at the address for the past 30 years, the current owner is now seeking to downsize nearby. The sale of Well Walk thus presents a rare opportunity to reside in an iconic house in a setting which inspired many of Constable’s renowned works. Alongside its history, the property is positioned in the heart of Hampstead Village and has well-proportioned accommodation which a future buyer could further enhance. We expect its appeal to be far-reaching, taking in those seeking a family home with straightforward access to amenities, transport and great schools as well as buyers captured by the prospect of living in the former home of one of the nation’s greatest ever artists.”
