A pick of the best homes for village life

The desirability of living in a well-connected village where there’s plenty to see and do remains as strong as ever.

Exactly what village characteristics are classed as essential will vary from buyer to buyer, but being close to a shop, pub and good walking routes tends to be high on the agenda, together with access to education and connectivity.

A sense of community is also important and whether it’s being able to join parenting groups, get involved in parish events or attend pilates in the village hall, all can be a major draw for those keen to meet others in a new neighbourhood.

When it comes to property, for some it’s a former vicarage fronting the green that makes for their ultimate village home, while for others it’s a perfectly formed chocolate box cottage with roses round the front door. And while traditional décor and period features are enduringly popular, increasingly village house-hunters are just as likely to be able to find modern design and contemporary interiors.

Below is a selection of the best village properties currently on the market, including a stunning Grade II listed cottage in the popular Buckinghamshire village of Penn and an award-winning 17th century barn conversion in charming Much Hadham in Hertfordshire.

FRENCH MEADOW COTTAGE, PENN

A stunning Grade II listed detached residence, set on a gated plot in the heart of Penn. This attractive village has a green and duck pond along with an independent delicatessen, four pubs, a sports and social club, village hall, doctors’ surgery and first and middle schools. Conveniently located to enjoy the surrounding Chilterns countryside, it’s also well placed for commuting to central London from Beaconsfield and High Wycombe train stations.

KETTLE GREEN LANE, MUCH HADHAM

A Grade II listed 17th century barn conversion, sensitively redesigned with award-winning architectural input in the charming village of Much Hadham. Offering a delightful blend of community spirit and modern convenience, amenities include a village shop and post office, a popular pub and well-regarded primary school. There’s also a recreation ground with a children’s play area, tennis court and bowls club, while regular bus services connect to Stanstead Abbots and Bishop’s Stortford.

SNELLS FARM, LITTLE CHALFONT

A collection of three highly individual properties located on a small farm estate close to the centre of Little Chalfont. The popular village has a thriving parade of shops, restaurants and coffee houses as well as excellent commuter links via Chalfont & Latimer station, and plenty of green space including Little Chalfont Nature Park and Westwood Park. The area also has a fine selection of highly regarded schools.
