Nice, France – A UNESCO World Heritage City

As residents of the beautiful city of Nice we are delighted to share in what the local mayor, Christian Estrosi, has described as a “historic event, unique in our history” for our beloved city.

A World Heritage site is designated by UNESCO for reasons of having particular cultural, historical or scientific importance and Nice has received the distinction under the label of the ‘Winter Resort Town of the Riviera”.

The new latest accolade highlights the city’s history as a tourist destination, particularly a winter destination since the 18th century, with European aristocracy boosting popularity following a new style of urban planning which modernised and transformed the city.

In addition to the range of exceptional architecture, with many buildings featuring Belle Epoque and Art Deco influences, the famous Promenade des Anglais is an example of the transformation of Nice.

Other popular sites within the city include Mont Boron with its 16th century castle, 140 acre park and range of exceptional villas, the area of Cimiez - which in addition to palatial residences featuring a range of architectural styles is the site of a roman amphitheatre and settlement, and it is difficult to avoid the city’s medieval old town featuring a maze of small streets and dual language street signs.

If Nice transformed due to a new style of urban planning, it is a legacy which remains in progress to this very day, under the careful guide of the local major the city has modernised further, reintroduced green spaces, developed eco-friendly policies, digital technology hubs and continues to restore the beautiful old buildings which create the fabric of the city.

And with Nice set to bid for the European Capital of Culture in 2028 all eyes are on the future of this dynamic and popular destination.
