Saffron Walden is a picturesque market town set in idyllic countryside and steeped in medieval history, it has a quintessential charm that has made it a popular choice for generations of homeowners. First called Walden and then Chipping Walden, the town officially changed its name in the early 1500s when the saffron crocus was grown extensively in the area and the saffron trade was at its peak.

The town offers a fine choice of schools and a plethora of independent retailers, cafés, pubs and delicatessens, some of which can be found in the Rows which has provided the town’s shopping centre since medieval times. There is also plenty of open space and amenities to discover, the Common is the oldest of Saffron Walden’s open spaces. The Castle ruins are nearby together with St Mary’s Church – the largest parish church in Essex – and beyond is Bridge End Gardens, a true jewel in the crown perfect for a quiet wander. Saffron Hall offers a fantastic selection of concerts throughout the year, while the independent Saffron Screen cinema is a firm favourite with film-goers. Both venues are situated within the grounds of Saffron Walden County High School and are hugely popular.

Saffron Walden’s links to its past are evident at every turn, with a stunning range of architecture. There are many fine period homes in Castle Street and Bridge End, for example. Buildings of note include the Old Sun Inn, the Eight Bells, the timber-framed Cross Keys and the Grade I listed 1 Myddylton Place, which was formerly the youth hostel and is now believed to be one of the town’s oldest inhabited properties. Saffron Walden has a wonderful variety of properties of varying periods - from Medieval timber framed Grade II Listed buildings to Victorian Villas - together with some tasteful modern developments and apartments.

Audley End station located outside of the Town Centre offers services to London Liverpool Street and Cambridge. For the road commuter the M11 (Junctions 8 & 9) are 11 and 7 miles respectively. The M11 leads south to Stansted airport which offers an express train service into London Liverpool Street together with domestic and international air services. The M11 connects with the M25 and central and east London via the A406 and the A13. Stratford International Station provides non-stop services on the Eurostar into continental Europe.
