I studied Petroleum Engineering at Portsmouth University and have recently completed my MSc in Sustainable Engineering: Renewable Energy Systems and the Environment at the University of Strathclyde.
In my second year studying Petroleum Engineering I decided I wanted to work in an industry that promoted sustainability, with global warming a constant threat to the environment I found I wasn’t passionate or excited to work within the petroleum industry. With this I decided that I wanted to work within the renewable energy sector.
During my MSc I had opportunities to work on projects focussed on energy infrastructure which fuelled my passion to pursue a career in Energy consulting. I knew I wanted flexibility in my role to work on different projects.
My day as a graduate energy consultant is quite varied with different projects and tasks.. By my second week I was assisting the team on projects with smaller task’s such as helping conduct research for a client report and attending meetings to get a feel of the business. I found the transition from University to working less daunting this way as I was able to ask questions and take time to get used to the work the team works on.
In recent weeks I have begun to take on more responsibility in projects engaging with clients, arranging meetings and assisting with report writing (my name is now on a report, a small but exciting achievement!). The level of trust you are given from day one may sound scary at first, but I have found that even though I am taking ownership for my work I am still able to ask for support and guidance when needed. My typical day now involves a lot of variety something I really enjoy. Since starting in September I have assisted on projects ranging from Offshore wind to EV charging to Solar, reviewing project feasibility to conducting tender assessments and report writing. I am now working on projects with oversight from the experts in the team and regularly receive feedback on my work.
I would say one of the best things about my role is the level of support and understanding, having no previous work experience in the energy sector this has been a great experience, I am encouraged to challenge things and ask questions regularly.
Outside of work I am a volunteer STEM ambassador for AFBE-UK and volunteer on some weekends and help organise events. I mainly spend my weekends going out for meals and cinema with friends and on the rare occasion I enjoy going on hikes.
