After her divorce, Becca didn’t want to take the risk of renting a place on her own, and moved back in with her parents. Now, thanks to Savills shared ownership, she is a happy homeowner with security for her future. Becca bought a 40% share of her one bedroom flat for £75,000.

"When I was renting, every month you’ve got the worry, are they going to put the rent up, are they going to kick us out because they want to sell the house…you can never have the security of having a home, it’s just somewhere you live.
"Following my divorce I was back with Mum and Dad which was not nice at nearly 40 years old. I knew I wouldn’t be able to get a full deposit together for a 100% mortgage.
"I have never been involved in buying or selling a house…I sort of understood the way shared ownership worked, but [the consultant] explained it in a way that made it really easy.
"It sounds really simple once you know it, but when you’re new to it you literally don’t know anything…they reassured me that nothing was a silly question."
"[PriME1] was on my route to work every day, it would catch my eye and I thought it’s obviously meant to be. It’s just the perfect place; it’s near the high street but not too near, it’s near the train station, it’s near work, near friends, near the town."
With a hands-on job involving unpredictable hours, it was especially important for Becca to have a stable home to come back to at the end of a long day. She trusted her parents to check she was making the right choice.
"I’m a senior support worker for adults with learning disabilities and challenging behaviours. It’s shift work so it’s crazy sometimes. It’s a lovely job, you don’t get very well paid for it, because it’s care and inevitably, you never do. To have stability at home is really nice…it just feels relaxing. It’s hard to explain it, but you can’t quite relax in someone else’s house.
"I definitely think that people that are interested should do a little bit of research into it and realise that it’s not actually as complicated as it might initially appear."

"I was on holiday the weekend [of the open day] so I showed my Mum and Dad everything, I said I really am interested, can you go for me and take pictures…it was a case of my Dad learning to video chat with me!
"I literally didn’t see inside until my home demonstration…I think a few people thought I was sort of mad to do that, but I think it’s quite a common thing these days [to buy off-plan].
"The cost is really good for what you are getting, and you own a part of it, which is the main bit. And it’s cheaper – friends that I’ve got that rent in the area, [my apartment is] a lot cheaper than theirs, and they’re not getting anything out of it. I feel sorry for them now!
"I definitely think that people that are interested should do a little bit of research into it and realise that it’s not actually as complicated as it might initially appear…the steps are pretty much taken care of, it’s just you having your input and paying the fees, and everyone does what they need to do. It’s really nice, and really worth it."
