CHALLENGE

Trafford Centre approached the Savills Sustainability team to assist with obtaining ModeScore certification for the centre to demonstrate its strengths in mobility, local transport and connectivity.

SOLUTION

Centre-specific information and documentation were collated and reviewed to assess the centre against the ModeScore scorecard and the following strengths are highlighted:

1. Public Transport: Trafford Centre is well served by public transport, with bus and Metrolink tram services. There is a dedicated on-site bus station at the centre, with over 35 buses per hour running to a range of local destinations. Trafford Park Metrolink Line (TPL) opened in March 2020 and terminates right outside its flagship Selfridges store on Barton Dock Road.

2. Private Vehicles: Trafford Centre has 14 car parks and over 10,500 spaces, including accessible and ‘parent and child’ spaces. The centre currently has a total of 36 EV charging points across the site, with 18 standard EV charging points located across the site and 18 Tesla superchargers in its Regent car park.

3. Active Travel: Trafford Centre is well positioned for pedestrian access from the nearby residential areas, with dedicated pedestrian routes into, and around, the centre which are well-lit and covered by CCTV. It is also well-served by local cycle routes. The Bridgewater Cycleway runs along the Bridgewater Canal and provides a dedicated off-road cycle route to the centre (via the rear of Trafford Palazzo) from the city centre, Old Trafford, Stretford, Sale and Altrincham. Cycle parking is available in various locations around the centre, as well as a secure cycle parking facility adjacent to the bus station. Shower and changing facilities are also provided for directly employed centre staff.

4. Site-Wide Mobility: There are 10 service yards on site. Twenty-four hour access is available. Any deliveries to Trafford Centre site are provided with, and abide by, the rules for delivery contractors. Vehicles delivering equipment/supplies for contractors are allowed a short duration for deliveries. There are Amazon lockers and Collect+ points. The information on public transport, private vehicles, active travel and site-wide mobility is shared with occupiers and visitors via the centre’s website, its travel plan and on the Trafford Centre app.

RESULTS

Trafford Centre achieved ModeScore Gold: 67% (80/120); which includes ActiveScore Silver (43/100).

Trafford Centre is the largest Retail destination in the UK to achieve ModeScore certification and the first in the sector to be awarded ModeScore Gold.

A further benefit of achieving ModeScore Gold (or Platinum) certification is that this can be submitted as part of the supporting documentation towards BREEAM In-Use certification credits for implementing sustainable transport options.

This award reflects our ongoing commitment to providing accessible, sustainable travel options for all our visitors and staff. It’s an honour to see the Trafford Centre recognised on a global scale for our efforts in sustainable transport infrastructure.
