When Savills was instructed as the managing agent at Liverpool's Albert Dock two years ago, the sympathetic refurbishment of its iconic Salthouse Bridge was immediately identified as a key priority. The bridge had not been maintained for more than 30 years and was in a severe state of dilapidation, but undertaking such a complicated project at a major tourist attraction was a complex task.
We liaised with the Environment Agency and specialist engineers to plan the closure of the waterway and undertake structural, painting and expansion joint replacement surveys.
Government-appointed paint system inspectors carried out toxic testing to the red lead paint which had been applied to the bridge at the time of construction and identified that a full shot blast was required to remove it. This involved a full suspended scaffold and EnviroWrap to prevent the toxic particles from entering the water.
Finally, we carried out utilities and service duct testing and the subsequent replacement of usable utility ducts and removal of others not used.
Work took place 24/7 throughout the duration of the 13-week project so we used the only silent up-exhaust compressor generating system in the UK to minimise disruption. In fact, not one noise complaint was received from either of the two hotels or hundreds of residents on site.
The end result saw the Salthouse Bridge returned to its former glory and the work will stand it in good stead for the next 15-20 years.
