Rural Newsletter - June 2012

This newsletter reaches you at a very positive time for the rural sector. As you will see from the Agency Update, the land market is extremely buoyant, especially for prime commercial holdings. Commodity prices are strong, and healthy profitibility is sustaining good rental incomes.

At the same time, a range of developments and trends offer further opportunities for farmers and landowners to expand or enhance their operations. The National Planning Policy Framework, published on 27 March, offers real support for diversification by easing the conversion of farm buildings and the building of new ones, thus opening up new avenues for tourism and business-related projects. Furthermore, the Government is keen to promote housebuilding, and therefore it is a perfect time for landowners to reappraise their assets and feed into their local planning policy.

The recent (and, in some places, current) drought, followed by exceptional levels of rainfall, suggests that extremes of weather could pose problems for farmers in the future. It is therefore sensible to make arrangements, if possible, for secure water supplies and storage; the article on the Governments proposals for water abstraction provides essential information on this subject.

Energy is another prominent issue that has prompted many landowners to review their holdings from an energy perspective: timber and energy generation are climbing up the agenda on many farms and estates. The rapid changes in Government support through feed-in tariffs makes it important to keep up to date on developments, and our experts are being kept very busy in this field. Our look at the situation concerning photovoltaics makes topical reading.

Now is the time to think about how to make the most of the many opportunities, and plan for the challenges ahead. I hope this newsletter will provide food for thought.
