Introduction - December 2012

The British rural sector is in excellent health, with its diverse income mix showing great resilience against the wider economic difficulties.

Savills research predicts that, despite nine years of sustained price rises, GB farmland values are set to rise by an average of 40% over the next five years. With strong demand for top quality arable land unlikely to abate, the gap between the best and the rest is likely to widen further, as Alex Lawson explains.

Commercial forestry has also enjoyed a bumper year, with average sale prices jumping by 49%. According to our Forest Market Report, buyers are increasingly seeking larger blocks of land. And with continued interest in timber, biomass and carbon sequestration, Jonathan Henson believes the future is bright.

Landlords and tenants can now improve the energy efficiency of their home or business without any up-front costs, under a new government initiative called the Green Deal. We explain how you can improve the energy efficiency of your home or business by securing a loan and cashback for qualifying technology.

And we are delighted to announce that Giles Hanglin, head of agribusiness in the East, has won the Agricultural Young Consultant of the Year Award. Run by the British Institute of Agricultural Consultants, the competition aims to celebrate the skilled and enthusiastic young consultants working within the rural sector. The past year may have brought some atrocious weather and plenty of challenges for our farming and rural clients. But there is much to be thankful for, and many opportunities for the year ahead. As ever, we are happy to help with any enquiries you might have, and wish you a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
