Shah Swaps Paper For Wood
Former newspaper boss Eddie Shah, who founded Today and revolutionised the print industry, has launched a new venture: he is building New England-style holiday homes in Wiltshire - with the emphasis firmly on wood from a sustainable source.
Shah and his wife Jennifer, who bought The Wiltshire Golf Club two years ago and have since added a hotel, and conference facilities, have brought in Savills Leisure Team in Oxford to market the 44 timber lodges.
His love of wood is evident. He explains: "It is a wonderful building material, with warmth and character. We hunted for the best and found it in Canada, where the pines produce the most superior timber with the best qualities. Everything that can be made of wood, is: framework, floors, window frames, doors and external cladding."
Eddie Shah is also keen on energy saving and enthuses about the heat transfer system installed in each home, which can cut fuel costs by up to 75%, and the grey water flushing system which reduces water usage. Other features include low energy lighting, solar powered extractor fans and extensive insulation. There is also a 'sun tube' installed in each home to provide natural light to the upper floor and avoid having to switch on lights so often.
The Wiltshire Leisure Village incorporates three styles of property, linked in varied groups of two, three and four lodges. The largest, Marlborough, is a 1,500 sq ft 4-bedroomed lodge arranged over three floors, with stunning views from the hexagonal master bedroom. Next comes the 2-storey Avebury, with 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and spacious living accommodation; and finally the similar but slightly smaller (1,040 sq ft) Ridgeway.
All styles come with a fully fitted kitchen (NEFF double oven, ceramic hobs, washing machine, dryer, fridge-freezer and dishwasher), good sized patio/decking area and ample parking space. Carpets can be fitted if required and a full fit-out service is available.
Kay Smith of Savills says: "At prices of £265,000, £221,000 and £198,000 respectively, The Wiltshire Lodges represent excellent value for money and the ecological features are a real bonus for anyone who cares about the environment."
Two show homes, a Marlborough and an Avebury, are available to view and the scheme is on course to be build complete by September 2007.
Buyers can rent out their homes if they wish, either through The Wiltshire's recommended agent or independently. Lodge owners will enjoy all the club's facilities - including 27 holes of golf, bar, restaurant, swimming pool, gym and beauty spa - and full membership rights. The Shahs also have plans to add an outdoor swimming pool, barbecue area and tennis courts.
The Wiltshire Leisure Village is just outside Wootton Bassett, about 5 miles from Swindon and within striking distance of Heathrow.
