What is Jersey like?
Jersey lives up to its picture-postcard image, with famed golden beaches, pretty countryside and spectacular historic sites. A thriving cultural scene includes top-flight opera and drama at the St Helier Opera House, wide-ranging visual and performance programmes at the Jersey Arts Centre and a huge variety of quality restaurants and bars.
Property in Jersey
Although a fixed pool of houses is available on the open market, most property on Jersey is regulated; buyers must qualify for residency according to local connections, essential employment or tax contribution. Once residency requirements have been met, there is a superb choice of property on offer, ranging from chic apartments and cottages to traditional granite farmhouses and sizeable estates.
There is no one favoured area on Jersey — all parts of the island are desirable, although cosmopolitan and historic St Helier is an obvious focus. The island’s landscape is astonishingly varied, and it is this that dictates choice of location. The north west corner, around St Ouen and St Peter, is very like Cornwall, with sheer cliffs and high ground; in the south east, near Grouville, the flat scenery is redolent of the Lincolnshire Wolds.
The local scene
The delightful retail sector features numerous independent businesses alongside top-end high street names, and there are endless sporting opportunities: sailing and watersports are particularly well catered for, with an extensive marina at St Helier.
Buyers are predominantly families moving from the UK mainland, attracted by the safe community and excellent schools.
St Helier Airport offers flights to London Gatwick and London City Airports, and to Birmingham, Edinburgh, Dublin, Paris, Geneva and Chambéry.
Regular ferry services sail to Weymouth and Poole in around four hours, to Portsmouth overnight, and to St Malo in an hour.
Schools in Jersey
Jersey’s superb schools are a major draw, and include St George’s Preparatory School for boys in St Peter; St Michael’s Preparatory Schools for boys, De La Salle RC College for boys and Jersey College for Girls in St Saviour; and Victoria College and Beaulieu Convent School for girls in St Helier.
