Overview
Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland with a population of 580,000 and a wider catchment of 1,200,000 people.
There are 13,000 businesses in the city which employ some 400,000 people producing £17bn annually. For this reason, Glasgow is known as Scotland’s Commercial Capital. Key sectors include utilities, business support, defence, professional services and construction. There is an established International Financial Services District which has attracted £1bn of private investment.
The city is well served by road, rail and air. The M8 motorway links the heart of the Glasgow with Scotland’s motorway network whilst Glasgow Airport handles circa £7million passengers every year.
Glasgow is also known as Scotlands’ Culture Capital and it is famed for its hospitality and friendliness with visitors making 2.3million trips annually. The city is also home to the UK’s second largest population of students who come to study at the many Universities and Colleges.
The city is recognised as a leading retail destination which is centred around prime Buchanan Street. Glasgow is considered to be second only to London for the best shopping experience in the UK.
Glasgow was voted City of Architecture and Design in 1999 and will host the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
