Bishop's Stortford has a population of around 35,000, it is the closest town to Stansted Airport and has excellent road and rail links to London.

Historically, the town grew up around the ford of the River Stort. In 1060 the Bishop of London paid £8 for the Stortford Estate, and from then onwards it became known as Bishop's Stortford.

Today the town is a thriving cosmopolitan centre attracting many nationalities because of the proximity to the airport. Bishop's Stortford still enjoys a traditional market on Thursday and Saturday with a monthly farmers’ market and regular continental markets adding to the variety.
