What's it like to live in Hampshire?
One of the largest counties in the south of England with a recorded history of over 1,000 years dating back to Anglo-Saxon times. Hampshire has a rich history, famous for being the birthplace of the Royal Navy, RAF and British Army, as well as the former capital city of England, Winchester. 85% of Hampshire is defined as rural and over a third of the county’s area is within National Parks or Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this includes the New Forest and the South Downs that are famed for their glorious countryside walks and cycle routes.
Most of Hampshire's southern coastline is on the Solent, the strait separating mainland Britain from the Isle of Wight. This stretch of water has had a long association with sailing and has many yacht clubs. The Isle of Wight is home to the Royal Yacht Squadron, founded in 1815 and the most prestigious yacht club in the United Kingdom and arguably the world.
Most of the county is within 1-2 hours' reach of London by main-line railway and motorway links.
