The Walled Garden, Woodbridge

Prices from £475,000

A hundred years ago Sudbourne Hall was entering the twilight of its days of glory. At the end of the First World War it would never again be the centre of a large and thriving estate, surrounded by many acres of flower and vegetable gardens, glasshouses and walled gardens.

In 1951 the main hall, devastated by years of military occupation, was demolished. It left behind two main wings, a large stable courtyard and extensive garden buildings and walls. All of this, together with the lake and avenues, gradually fell into disrepair over the years, until in the 1980’s the main buildings were saved by conversion into houses. The building of 10 new houses in and around the Walled Garden has now enabled the fine old garden walls to be restored, the lake to be dredged and the ornamental bridge over it to be repaired. The avenues that form the Victorian landscape of the Park will also be maintained into the future.

The new Walled Garden houses echo the shapes of the glasshouses and garden buildings that once stood here, and are built to the highest modern standards of construction and efficiency.

Residents of the Park, including those of the new houses, will be free to wander in the old ‘pleasure grounds’, around the lake and across the bridge. A new footpath will be opened leading straight up to Tunstall Forest, thousands of acres of Forestry Commission woodland.
