Head of Building Services - Burghley House

Job Description:

The Head of Building Services will manage and lead the Estate Maintenance Team, be responsible to the Estates Director for overseeing the delivery of the repair, maintenance, conservation and preservation of Burghley House, its portfolio of ‘let’ properties and its many historic and architecturally important buildings and heritage assets.  The role also includes the preparation and costing of specifications for building works, the provision of responsible, efficient and cost effective property management, maintenance and project management services, along with the supervision of works, health and safety related aspects and the associated paperwork.  The post carries a high level of responsibility and the post holder will be part of a large team at Burghley requiring good team working skills, but also be able to work unilaterally taking responsibility for their own actions.

The role is full time 35 hours per week and you will be expected to provide out of hours emergency cover on a rota basis.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for a team of 10 Tradesmen – Joiners, Collyweston Slaters, Painters and Stone Masons.
  • Monitor all properties to ensure that they are maintained in a good and legally compliant condition.
  • Maintain a five year repair and maintenance programme and produce an annual budget.
  • Attend to quinquennial works to Burghley House and its curtilage, monitor and instigate repairs and maintenance as set down by the annual works required.
  • Maintain records of ongoing maintenance issues and projects in hand and associated Health and Safety paperwork.
  • Prepare specifications and contracts for projects across the wide spectrum of ‘let’ and ‘in hand’ properties of the portfolio.
  • Manage the internal and external decorations of Burghley House and the ‘let’ and ‘in hand’ portfolios.
  • Co-ordinate contractors and sub-contractors for maintenance requirements.
  • Prepare and maintain standard specifications for building maintenance and redecoration and any associated Health and Safety paperwork.
  • Arrange cyclical maintenance for items such as gutters, downpipes and other regular required items at Burghley House and over the wider Estate.

Candidate Profile:

  • RICS qualified in Building construction or similar qualification.
  • IT proficient, particularly conversant with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and CAD drawing and mapping software.
  • Excellent accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Experience in financial management in relation to estate budgeting and project costing.
  • Be able to identify, specify and prioritise repair and/or maintenance issues on buildings of various ages, type, size and complexity.
  • Have a good working knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and policy within the industry and how this applies to Burghley and the employees and portfolios of property and land.
  • Prepare procedures and records for the Estate to ensure compliance with appropriate legislation.
  • Have in depth knowledge of building construction and services for buildings of various ages and type.
  • Ability to demonstrate team delivery of work and ‘hands on’ knowledge when required.
  • Show professionalism and loyalty to the Estate at all times.
  • Project Management or Construction Management experience and understanding is essential.
  • Experience of listed buildings, conservation and restoration is of importance.
