Blair Castle, Ayrshire, comes to the market for the first time in 900 years

12 May 2011

The Blair family traces its ancestry back to the time of William the Lion, who reigned from 1165 to 1214.  The king awarded the Barony of Blair to Jean François de Blare in 1165, for services rendered, and his son took the name of Blair.  Blair Castle lays claim to being the oldest continually inhabited mansion house or small castle in Scotland, lived in by the same family and never rebuilt or sold.

The original Norman tower of Blair is reputed to date back to 1105 and is built on the living rock, which can still be seen.  Over the centuries, it has been added to and today’s building is on a grand scale, reflecting the family’s prosperity and prestige in Victorian times.  It was important to the Victorians that their status was reflected in their homes and the embellished surroundings.  Over three generations the castle and the policies, with their fine collection of species trees, were brought to their current magnificence.

The current family occupiers, descendants of the original Baron Jean François de Blare, have renovated and revitalised Blair Castle and its estate over the last decade, bringing the ancient building back to life, both as a family home and as an exclusive, luxurious events venue.  In 2005 it was designated as a Five Star Exclusive Use Venue by VisitScotland, hosting both corporate and private events, including weddings.  Both Glasgow Airport and Prestwick are under 20 miles from Blair, making it easily accessible from all corners of the globe, by scheduled flight or private jet.

Savills Director, Anna Thomas says:  "Whoever buys this prestigious property will become the guardians of an important slice of Scottish history, with the Blair family's ownership tracing back to the 12th century.  The castle has been beautifully maintained and offers wonderful business potential as well as the chance to acquire an exceptional family home."
