Savills celebrates 60 years in Essex with a new home

13 September 2017

Over 150 years ago, Alfred Savill left Essex to try his fortunes in the City of London. Just over 100 years later, the successful business he founded returned to Essex with the opening of one of Savills first regional offices based on New London Road, Chelmsford.

For 60 years the New London Road office has been the integral base for Savills as it expanded its regional business into East Anglia. However, the time has come to move to a new home in the heart of the thriving city of Chelmsford and from 4 September 2017 Savills will occupy 4,800 sq ft of newly refurbished space at Parkview House in Victoria Road South.

As a business Savills has its roots firmly set in Essex soil. Alfred was a land agent who focused much of his attention on rural estates, while the opening of the business in Chelmsford was driven chiefly by agriculture-related work for the Essex Rivers Authority and the various Essex water companies, most of which amalgamated to form Essex Water.  Early instructions included land acquisition for the Abberton and Hanningfield reservoirs as well as work on the Ely Ouse scheme needed to bring water into the county from the Ouse.

Stephen White, head of office for Savills Chelmsford, comments: “We opened here in 1957 as a predominantly   land management and rural partnership business. While our New London Road office is a very attractive building externally, we currently have many teams on different floors and one of the aims of the move is to provide a creative and joined up working environment for our now multidiscipline business.

“Today our client base is wide ranging, reflecting the breadth of services we now offer including residential and new homes sales, commercial property advice and development consultancy alongside the original rural departments. We need a modern, open plan layout that gets all of our teams on one floor so they are able to cross communicate and continue to provide a one stop shop of property advice for clients. We are also closer to the city centre and a few minutes from the train station, which will allow clients and staff to travel by train or use one of Chelmsford’s new park and ride services.”

Phil Dennis, head of Savills commercial team in Chelmsford, adds: “We are always thrilled when one of our own offices needs a new home and it’s a pleasure to have agreed the deal to move the team to this new space. One of the key requirements for the move was a central location with ample parking which is quite hard to find in the city centre, but we also needed a strong presence for our residential team. The frontage of the office onto Parkway will give us a great window to showcase our properties for sale as well as meeting all the other criteria.”
