The Estate Benchmarking Survey, an annual publication from Savills Rural Research, provides a summary of the results of our 2008 survey of English estates. This issue shows that the past year was one of contrasts, especially in terms of investment performance. The agricultural sector recorded very significant returns on capital whereas returns in the residential sector were small.Key findings:Gross incomes on rural estates continued to rise, increasing by 7% in 2008, boosted by the upturn in agriculture.Total expenditure on all estates increased by just 1.9% during 2008, significantly less than inflation. This suggests that effective cost management is a strength of rural estates.Rising incomes and costs capped below inflation resulted in a significant increase (11%) to net incomes which realised £96 per acre (£237 per ha).
